McCAULEY 6174 4ohm 18" in 6 Cubic Foot cab
Sealed box vs. vented: yellow = vented, red = sealed
In the 30-50hz range a +3dBSPL (twice as loud) difference favors the vented cabinet with respect to output, although the sealed plot exhibits a slightly smoother response.
Power handling for loud volumes shows that the vented (yellow) plot handles 800 watts rms down to 25hz whereas the sealed (red) plot shows a marked decrease in power handling, i.e., @30hz the system only handles 100 watts rms. The air-cushioning of driver cones in sealed cabinets is difficult to achieve in large cabs and with PA drivers having lossy surrounds, and will not serve to keep the driver cone from bottoming out in long excursion.
The McCauley is able to excurse 1.2" overall, well within the cone displacement.
